Tabla Expertise 02

The Intermediate Tabla Course is designed for students who already have a basic understanding of tabla bols, thekas, and simple compositions. This course focuses on expanding rhythmic vocabulary, improving speed and clarity, and developing the skills needed for accompaniment and intermediate-level solo performances.

Module 1 – Rhythmic Expansion

• Revision of basic bols and hand technique
• Introduction to Teentaal (16 beats) and Rupak (7 beats)
• Playing in Vilambit, Madhya, and Drut tempos
• New bols and combinations for richer sound

Module 2 – Compositional Development

• Intermediate Kaidas with 2–3 paltas (variations)
• Simple Relas (fast compositions) for speed building
• Tukras and Mohra for performance endings
• Introduction to Jhaptal (10 beats) and Ektal (12 beats)  thekas

Module 3 – Accompaniment Skills

• Accompanying light classical vocal (bhajans, ghazals)
• Introduction to Kathak accompaniment patterns
• Maintaining steady laya while following artist cues

Module 4 – Improvisation & Rhythm Play

• Basics of Layakari (dugun, tigun, chaugun)
• Creating simple tihais to end phrases
• Combining kaidas, tukras, and relas in a short solo piece
