This course offers an immersive introduction to Kuchipudi, a classical Indian dance form from Andhra Pradesh, known for its graceful movements, rhythmic footwork, expressive storytelling, and dramatic flair. Students will explore the foundational elements of Kuchipudi, including adavus (basic steps), jathis (rhythmic patterns), mudras (hand gestures), abhinaya (expression), and bhavas (emotions). Emphasis will be placed on mastering posture, body alignment, and the coordination of movement with music and rhythm (nattuvangam). The course also includes an introduction to mythological themes and characters depicted through dance dramas, enabling students to tell stories through expressive mime and facial expressions.
As students progress, they will learn short pieces (items) and eventually full choreographies such as Jatiswaram, Tarangam, and Tillana. Special focus is given to the distinctive elements of Kuchipudi, including dancing on the brass plate (Tarangam) and dramatic monologues (Bhagavatha Mela tradition).
